John M. Humenik is publisher & editor of the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson, Arizona. The Star is the second largest-circulated newspaper in Lee Enterprises and Arizona. John joined The Star in December, 2005. He also oversees other newspapers operated by Lee Enterprises in California, Hawaii, and Arizona. He is in the leadership of Suburban Newspapers of America and will serve the organization as National President in 2009. He was elected as a Trustee of The Communications Institute in May 2008.

Prior to arriving in Tucson, he was editor of Lee’s Quad-City Times (Davenport, Iowa) for seven years. The Quad-City Times was named “Newspaper of the Year” by SNA in 2003 and 2002, and was recognized as one of “10 Newspapers That Do it Right,” by Editor & Publisher magazine in 2002. John was honored as national “Editor of the Year” by SNA in 2004.

While in the Quad-Cities, John also was publisher of On the River, the largest-circulated monthly on the Upper Mississippi River and was editor of the national award-winning monthly, the Quad-City Business Journal.

John was presentation/graphics editor at The Cincinnati Enquirer, a Gannett newspaper in Ohio, for five years (1994-98). He joined The Enquirer after spending eight years (1986-94), including four years as assistant managing editor, at The Times of Northwest Indiana (Munster), outside Chicago.

A 1985 journalism graduate of Eastern Illinois University, John received a full scholarship for journalism (1981-84) and was sports editor for the Daily Eastern News (1982-1984) which was recognized as the nation’s top college newspaper in 1982.

John lives in Oro Valley with his wife, Lisa, and their two children, Brian and Lauren. John is an avid baseball fan. As a member of the Society for American Baseball Research, he has presented his baseball research nationally.
